How much does IPL cost?
Is IPL painful or uncomfortable?
Who is not a suitable candidate for IPL?
Are there any side effects, skin redness or downtime after IPL?
Is IPL safe for light-sensitive eyes or higher Fitzpatrick skin types?
Most patients find IPL very comfortable. You may feel a brief warm sensation or a light snapping feeling on the skin with each pulse, but it only lasts a moment. Protective eye shields are worn during the treatment, and you can return to your normal activities straight afterwards.
IPL is not suitable for everyone. It may not be recommended if you:
Have very dark skin tones.
Have a recent tan or significant sun exposure.
Are taking medications that make your skin sensitive to light.
Have an active skin infection or open wound in the treatment area.
Have certain medical conditions or a history of light-sensitive disorders.
During your assessment, we'll review your medical history and skin type to determine whether IPL is safe and appropriate for you. If it's not, we can recommend other effective dry eye treatments.
Most patients experience little to no downtime after IPL. Mild redness or warmth of the skin is common but usually settles within a few hours. You can return to your normal daily activities straight away.
IPL is safe for most patients when performed by a trained clinician using protective eye shields. However, it may not be suitable for people with very dark skin tones (higher Fitzpatrick skin types) or certain light-sensitive medical conditions or medications. We'll assess your skin type and medical history before treatment to make sure IPL is safe and appropriate for you.
How often will I need maintenance treatment?
Most patients benefit from a maintenance IPL treatment every 6–12 months, depending on the severity of their dry eye and how well their symptoms are controlled. We'll recommend a personalised schedule based on your progress.
Can I wear make-up or contacts before treatment?
It's best to avoid eye makeup for 24 hours after treatment to allow the skin to recover. You can usually resume your normal skincare and makeup routine the following day.
Please remove your contact lenses before your appointment. You can usually wear them again later the same day if your eyes feel comfortable, although many patients prefer to wait until the following day.
Why do you combine IPL with gland expression & LLLT?
Each treatment targets a different part of dry eye disease. IPL reduces inflammation, meibomian gland expression clears blocked oil glands, and LLLT stimulates the glands to function more effectively. Combining these treatments provides a more comprehensive approach and often leads to better, longer-lasting relief than IPL alone.
