Meibomian Gland Expression FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does meibomian gland expression hurt?

Why is heat used before gland expression?

Applying heat softens the thickened oils trapped inside the meibomian glands, making them easier to express. This improves the effectiveness of the treatment and allows the glands to be cleared more comfortably.

No. Meibomian gland dysfunction is usually a chronic condition, so the glands can become blocked again over time. Ongoing home care and, in some cases, maintenance treatments help keep the glands functioning as well as possible.

Will my eyelids be sore afterwards?

Most patients experience pressure rather than pain. If your glands are significantly blocked or inflamed, you may feel some temporary discomfort while the glands are being expressed. We use techniques to keep you as comfortable as possible, and any discomfort usually lasts only during the procedure.

Will expression permanently unblock my glands?

Yes. Most patients can drive home immediately after meibomian gland expression. The procedure does not affect your ability to drive, and there is no recovery period required.

Can expression restore lost glands?

Some patients experience mild tenderness or sensitivity of the eyelids for a few hours after treatment, particularly if the glands were heavily blocked. This is usually temporary and settles quickly.

Can I drive home immediately after the procedure?

Meibomian gland expression cannot restore glands that have permanently atrophied or been lost. However, it can improve the function of glands that are still present but blocked, helping them produce healthier oils and supporting a more stable tear film.
